Material Safety Data Sheets - MSDS

The OSHA Hazard Communication Standard (HCS) 29 CFR 1910.1200 requires a material safety data sheet (MSDS) be maintained for all hazardous chemicals in your facility.  Now you’re thinking to yourself “I only have a few items that may be considered hazardous chemicals”, but did you know that most medications, topical creams/ointments, and lab items are considered hazardous chemicals?

If you were to estimate the number of products in your practice, how many would you think you have?

CORRECT! – It will take on average an employee a full EIGHT hours a day for SIX days to locate and retrieve the most current version of all MSDS’ from each vendor.

Did you also know that in addition to maintaining a current MSDS, you must have a comprehensive written chemical inventory and written Hazard Communication program?  Compliance Alliance is here to allow you and your staff to do what you do best. In addition to creating your customized Hazard Communication program, we have dedicated professionals who type and categorize your written chemical inventory, and continually search for and provide you with the most current MSDS’ in your practice – allowing you to direct your staff to more revenue generating activities.

How can Compliance Alliance help?

  • Compliance Alliance provides a typed and categorized chemical inventory. We also provide all MSDS’ to you on CD which allows downloading to any computer for easy retrieval, not to mention easy archiving.  MSDS’ must be maintained for the term of your practice PLUS 30 YEARS – a CD is much easier to archive than the dust covered binders currently taking over your shelves.

How often do I need to update my MSDS?

  • HCS requires that your facility maintain access to the most current manufacturer specific MSDS at all times.  It is common practice for most manufacturers to create and/or update MSDS’ on an annual or bi-annual basis.  If your office fails to request and maintain the most current MSDS for review by your staff, you are subject to citation and penalty.

What at my office needs to be labeled?

  • Any product in a secondary container, or an original container in which the label has worn off or been removed, must be labeled with a proper HMIG/HMIS four colored label.  Based upon the OSHA Solution best suited to your needs Compliance Alliance can provide laser imprinted water-resistant vinyl HMIG/HMIS labels, just call our office and they are sent to you within 24 hours!
